March 2014 Luncheon Meeting

Friday, March 21, 2014

Meeting Topic

Boundaries of the Smart Grid and RF Spectrum Requirements

presented by

Jerry Armes, P.E.
Consultant

To address the RF spectrum requirements of the Smart Grid and therefore the role that the FCC plays in regulating the Smart Grid, one must define the boundaries and logic involved to implement a functional system. One perspective on the boundaries of the Smart Grid includes the following elements:

  • Data Analytics in the form of Use Cases which define traffic,
  • RF Spectrum that supports wireless facilities that carry traffic, and
  • Demographics to describe the markets that require services, and the related traffic.

From this perspective, the Smart Grid boundaries can be seen as a complex combination of Use Cases, Geographic Area, Population Density, Spectrum Allocations and Frequency Reuse that define how the communications network core links to its outer extremities.

A key open boundary issue is the amount, and nature of, the Spectrum needed by the Smart Grid. In that context, the role of the FCC becomes paramount.

    About the Presenter:
As the CEO and cofounder of Spectrum Planning, Inc. (later acquired by Comsearch), and in his subsequent working life, Jerry has long experience in spectrum management. He was active from 2009-2011 in the SG-Networks Task Force, a wireless data analytics working group established within the UCA International Users Group under the umbrella of the NIST Standards Development process. He is a consulting engineer and is actively working with client companies to develop and/or expand their wireless smart grid infrastructure.
